Empire 2: Byzantium

Byzantium is the defensive pole of the five empires: raise walls, burn with Greek Fire, and silence your opponent with diplomacy. Where the Ottoman wants to climb its promotion tree, Byzantium wants to make climbing pointless — walls absorb siege, Greek Fire punishes anything that commits to the board, and diplomacy removes the enemy's loudest threats before they ever act. It is the classic control archetype translated into Tughra's rank-and-seal language.

Byzantine matches are expected to run longer and turn on patience. Your walls force the opponent to overcommit; your Greek Fire makes overcommitting expensive; your diplomacy silences the one card that would have undone you. The risk is the inverse of the Ottoman's: if your defenses fall you usually have less board left than an aggressive empire. In the tournament, Byzantium is the natural counter-pick into siege-light empires — and the natural target of Ottoman cannon.

The signature Byzantine seal is the Eagle. A defensive empire rewards seals that pay out over many turns — anything that draws, heals the fortress, or taxes the opponent's aggression compounds over a long game. Keep your wall count honest: a Byzantine deck that skews entirely on defense loses to the empires that simply out-tempo it, so reserve deck slots for a finishing plan.
